My Name is Mutua.

I am founder of Jembe Fund, a Nonprofit organization that provides high school teens in Africa access to digital learning. The idea behind Jembe Fund began with a simple Junior high assignment to research and write a report on poverty and hunger. I volunteered at a local food bank to get a firsthand look at the issue for himself. I made a presentation of the report to the school board staff. Impressed by my efforts, they recommended I see what else I could do to help. I soon realized that money my friends & I drop on clothes and electronics can have an amazing, huge impact on families in developing countries.

I think a lot of young people will be shocked at how little money it takes to transform someone’s life in these countries. I want to show them that what is a small amount of money to us, ($15-25 dollars), can go a long way in a different country.

I decided to focus my efforts on Africa, where just a couple of hundred bucks could transform a family’s life. I also realized that there were lots of charities out there, but none that really focused on teens like me and how we could contribute. I was wrong — young people do want to make a difference in the world.

For just the price of some air pods, you could give a high school teen in Africa a shot at breaking the cycle of poverty and ability to compete in the technologically driven world in which we live. All that for the price of something so tiny!” I hope other teens will be inspired to help with this noble cause. My next goal is to reach 1000 donations by the start of the next school year.
